Naviterier Routeplanner is a web application oriented on route planning for blind pedestrians, running in all standard web browsers. Planning a trip from one place to another is done similarly to other navigation route planning engines, however with respect to the blind pedestrian’s needs. Route description contains useful information about significant landmarks in a vicinity, the slopes of sidewalks, corner shapes, traffic noise, etc.

iOS Navigation Application

Naviterier is a conversational navigation application for blind pedestrians, working on standard smartphones and in simplified mode on phones with the Symbian operating system. High positioning accuracy is achieved by unique usage of landmarks and terrain features which compensate insufficient accuracy of GPS satellite localization. The application is highly reliable especially in dense urban areas and thus becomes an ideal tool for pedestrians with limited orientation and movement.

Where does it work?

Currently only in Czech Republic, Naviterier works best with ROUTE4ALL geographical information database created by CEDA corporation. Currently, the specially created maps for Naviterier navigation applications and services now cover 150 km of sidewalks (approximately 3 square kilometres of dense sidewalk network), crossings and pedestrian areas in the Prague city center.

History of the Naviterier project at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague dates back to 2007. Since then, dozens of experiments were conducted with hundreds of visually impaired participants. The research results were used to design and implement a series of prototypes navigation applications and were presented at prestigious international conferences and journals.
